Barry Newman, CEO
Barry Newman has more than 40 years of experience in all aspects of construction and development and oversees all daily operations of the business. He has formed a number of successful construction and manufacturing companies and has been a benefactor and board member for many charitable organizations for many years.
Marc Newman, NDG Northeast
Marc is the founding member of Newman Development Group, which he formed with other partners in 1983. Over the past 30 years, Marc has established NDG as a national leader in retail and commercial development with over $1 billion in successful projects comprising over 10 million square feet. In 2004 Marc redirected the firms focus to student housing, multi-family and mixed-use projects, creating new opportunities for development, acquisition and construction. He is actively involved in all aspects of development, including land entitlement, financing, budgeting analysis, leasing and project oversight. Marc has been very active in the community serving on the board of several college, community and civic organizations.
David Newman, NDG Mid-Atlantic
David has led the Mid-Atlantic office since 1998. David and his development team have entitled and developed numerous "big box" anchored retail projects in New Jersey and Pennsylvania valued in excess of $200 million. Prior to joining NDG, David founded, grew and ultimately sold United Structures, Inc. ("USI"), a telecommunications infrastructure provider to the wireless industry. David has a BS from Ithaca College and a JD from Hofstra University.
Jeff Smetana, NDG Student Living™
Jeff has been involved with the development and acquisition of over 5,300 beds of student housing valued in excess of $270 million, including $120 million in public-private deals financed with tax-exempt bonds. Overall, Jeff has 25-plus years of experience in real estate development, construction, property management, finance and accounting. His development experience also includes senior housing, residential and commercial projects worth over $500 million, which have involved a broad range of financing structures, including conventional, tax-exempt, tax credits and a variety of equity arrangements. Jeff is a certified public accountant and has a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in accounting from the University at Albany.
Jerry Wojenski, NDG Student Living™
Jerry is the Executive Vice President and COO at NDG Student Living™. In this capacity, he oversees the operations of our student housing communities, and is responsible for developing scalable operations platforms to support our growing portfolio. With over 15 years of experience in student housing, Jerry works with management services in developing student-only live/learn communities. Prior to joining NDG, he held various progressive roles at EdR, ACC, and Campus Apartments. Jerry earned a B.S. in English and Information Sciences from the University of Illinois and a MBA from East Carolina University.
John Nicolich, Construction Management
John has managed all of NDG's construction work over the past 20 years, comprising $500+ million in projects across the US. He is directly responsible for all aspects of construction, including budgeting, subcontractor and vendor negotiations, and construction management. John is also integrally involved with preconstruction planning and programming, including design, engineering, approvals and development. Overall, John has more than 23 years of experience in construction and construction management. John has a BE in Engineering.
George Akel, NDG West
For over twelve years, George has led the West Coast development team in dealing with all aspects of acquiring and developing real estate in California, Oregon and Washington State. Throughout his tenure, he has developed seven regional shopping centers, totaling about 2 million square feet and valued at over $150 million. George holds a BS from Cornell University as well as a MBA from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Jeff Akel, NDG West
Jeff has over ten years of corporate and real estate finance experience. Prior to joining NDG, Jeff held various Finance and Business Development positions at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and most recently was Director of International Mergers & Acquisitions where he led and managed the diligence process. Jeff holds a BS from Cornell University as well as a MBA from Columbia University.
Harry Conklin, Construction Superintendent
Harry has 27 years of experience as a Construction Superintendent and is responsible for managing all on-site operations. He has been responsible for numerous substantial and complicated projects, many with a contract value in excess of $10 million and has never missed a deadline. Harry has particular expertise in site work, masonry, rough carpentry and concrete work. He was the Superintendent for the Twin River Commons Project (371 beds / $18.1 million) and University Plaza (710 beds / $24.5 million), both of which were delivered within budget and ahead of schedule.
Jeff Smith, Engineer / CAD Operator
Jeff has 14 years of experience and provides engineering, design and estimating services for NDG projects. He also has 10 years of experience as a Combat Engineer in the US Army and has a AAS Degree in Civil Engineering from Broome Community College.
